Proprietor Mike Caddy and the PB Management Team have just returned from Cordorniu’s Cavas where they were researching potential new Cava’s and wines to add to the Pebble Beach wine list. Joined by Michelle Shepherd, National Account Manager for Codonui and Emily Warner, Account Manager from Matthew Clark the team were lucky enough to be taken on an exclusive private tour of the Codorniu Winery.
The Codorníu family have been making wines in the Penedés region of Spain since 1551; with over 18 generations of experience, they are one of the longest continuous wine-making families in Spain. Codorniu were the first to produce sparkling wine in Spain, having spent time with the great Champagne houses in France in 1872. Like Pebble Beach, Innovation is core to the family’s philosophy. They were one the first to introduce New World wine-making in the 1960s, and in 1984 they were one of the first to bring international grape varieties into their Cava DO, namely Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
“We were totally overwhelmed by the impressive modernist Cordoniu complex (enlarged by Josep Puig I Cadafalch in 1895); representing the stunning alliance between human nature and a stone tribute to the silence of cava”
(Mike Caddy, Proprietor)
The team were also thrilled not only to see the gardens, the museum and a tour train; but also, had the chance to taste Cava with Cordornui’s head wine maker (Bruno Colomer). This took place in the dining room of the Cordornui family home. Experiencing wine products first hand and seeing the history enhances the knowledge, passion and understanding of our wines.
If you want to try some too why not come to our Spanish Evening on Tuesday 8 November, and we’ll be putting their products in our new online wine shop (https://www.pebblebeach-uk.com/wineclub) in the near future.
